Different Types Of Carpet

Over the last few centuries, developments in carpet manufacture have led to a wide range of carpet styles becoming available to both home and commercial users. Combining these many different styles with the variety of man-made and natural fibres used in carpeting increases our choices even more.

Axminster Carpet

Axminster carpet is woven, and in its production, the tufts are inserted during the weaving of the backing. This style of carpet generally consists of jute wefts, and warps made of jute, cotton or synthetic materials. Each tuft is U-shaped and held in place by the weft, giving Axminster its characteristic velvety surface.

Although it is possible to produce them in plain colours, Axminster carpets are usually always patterned, with the intricacy of design depending on the type of loom used.

Berber Carpet

Berber carpets are named after a hand made bulky wool that was textured and used by a tribe in North Africa: the Berber tribe. The Berber carpet that is used even today follows the same tradition of the tribe by using flecked bulky yarns to create a beautiful carpet. Berber carpets are generally used in the more casual areas with more traffic, like a family room. Some frieze or cut-pile Berber carpets are more stylish and may be used in more formal areas.

Berbers limit footprints and vacuum tracks in informal areas.
Berbers can have thicker yarns than other level loop pile carpets for high durability. These loops can retain dirt and may be damaged from snags.
Berbers come in expensive wool fibres or less expensive nylon, olefin, or nylon-polyester fibres.
There are several loop sizes with Berber carpets, from the large knobbly loops to small and tight loops. There are several choices as well, that include cut and loop designs, multiple level loops, and even level loops.
The air pockets in the loops give the carpet a nice cushioned feel when you walk across it. They also offer an insulation factor, which helps to regulate the temperature of the room.
Berber is easy to lay.

Cut and Loop Pile Carpet

Cut and loop pile combines cut and looped fibres to provide a variety of surface textures or sculptured effects for medium durability.

Intermixed loops and cut pile, creates a patterned design
Loops are shorter than the cut pile creating a carved appearance
Usually constructed in multi-colour designs, although solid colours also available
The different levels help hide footprints and traffic patterns
Multicolour effects hide soil and stains
Good choice for a variety of room settings

Cut Pile Saxony Carpet

   Refined cut-pile surface
   Generally made in solid colours
Surface has a smooth, soft appearance
Generally made with nylon, wool or polyester fibres
   Good performance and appearance
Works well with traditional or formal room settings
Adds distinctive elegance to any room
Ideal for living and dining rooms
Shows every footprint and vacuum-cleaner mark
   Medium durability

Frieze Carpet

Frieze is a highly twisted cut pile carpet suited for high traffic, informal areas. It has short fibres that tend to curl in different directions at the surface to hide footprints and vacuum marks.

   Extremely durable and excellent wearing
   Very textured, knobbly surface appearance
   Yarns very tightly twisted
Cost more than textured cut pile carpets
Good for active areas of the home

Level Loop Carpet

Level loop pile is made by weaving even loops of yarn into carpet backing at both ends. This type of carpet is very durable and track resistant because of its strong loops. Level loop piles with short and densely packed loops are easy to clean. They prevent dirt from filtering into carpet. Higher loops create a more luxurious appearance.

Loops are same height and generally multi-coloured
A wool-like look and rugged loop surface
Usually made from polypropylene (olefin) carpet fibres
Natural, hand-crafted appearance creates a warm, personal atmosphere
   Casual appearance, but extremely durable
Tight loop texture helps hide footprints and vacuum marks
Subtle patterns fit a variety of room styles
Ideal choice for contemporary to country to cottage furnishings

Multi-Level Loop Carpet

Multi-level loop pile is similar to level loop pile except that the loop heights vary (usually two to three different loop heights), creating an appearance of random texture. This type of carpet is good for high traffic areas but the smaller loops can sometimes hold more dirt.

   Generally multi-coloured
Has several different heights of loops
Offered in many unique looking designs and patterns
   Very durable, casual appearance
   Helps hides traffic patterns
Great for family rooms and casual areas

Textured Cut Pile Saxony Carpet

   Surface appearance is textured
   Stylish, casual appearance
   Very popular carpet style
Textured surface helps hide footprints and vacuum marks
Good choice for active areas of the home
Adds casual beauty to any room
   A great 'whole-house' carpet

Velvet (Plush) Carpets

Velvets (or plushes) are lightly twisted and have a uniform colour. They are softer and more level than textured carpets and are ideal for formal areas (such as master bedrooms and living rooms) because of their luxurious appearance. However, this type of carpet will show every footprint and vacuum-cleaner mark.

Wilton Carpet

Wilton carpets are woven using one long continuous thread that is carried through the backing between tufts. This adds to the strength and weight of the carpet, but also makes this type of carpet more expensive than other woven carpets, such as Axminster.

Wilton carpet is either plain or patterned with a limited range of colours. The number of colours is constrained by the weaving process, and Wilton designs will usually consist of no more than five colours.

Always get your carpet professionally cleaned
by a reputable local carpet cleaning company once every six to twelve months.
